Don’t Look Now: Selected Stories of Daphne Du Maurier
If you’re looking for something to set an uncanny mood, Du Maurier’s stories, mood boards for Gothic and overwrought emotions, are the way to go. She’s most famous for Hitchcock’s Rebecca and The Birds.
I just finished her book, My Cousin Rachel. It’s not as good as Rebecca. It drags on a bit and while it can be satisfying to want to shout at a protagonist’s poor choices, this went on too far, and I was ready to just let him die, already. But if you need something similar to Rebecca, this hits some of the same themes (romantic peril and delusions) with the genders switched. My Cousin Rachel compels you to find out what happens because surely, Philip cannot be this foolish! (He is.)
I like to imagine older dead writers cackling to themselves in today’s vernacular while writing their now-classics. Edith Wharton about Undine Spragg, “THIS bitch!” DuMaurier writing My Cousin Rachel, “This dumb fuck. Pussy whipped.”
I came late to this song, but it’s a favorite: Lou Reed, “Waves of Fear”
