Today’s recommendation:
“Big White Cloud” by John Cale, from his album, Vintage Violence
I finally read the essay I needed to read in order to write my big essay. It’s “In Plato’s Cave” by Susan Sontag, in her book On Photography
“The inventory started in 1839 and since then just about everything has been photographed, or so it seems. This very insatiability of the photographing eye changes the terms of confinement in the cave, our world. In teaching us a new visual code, photographs alter and enlarge our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe.”
Aside from the idea here about photographs changing our perceptions of what is worth viewing, and what we have a right to view, all photographers understand this insatiability. I write and I’ve played music, but photography is the one art form that has been the most compulsive to me. Writing for me is much more measured, and I often do it when I don’t actually feel like it, because I have to in order to get it done. But I woke this morning earlier than I wanted (good thing! I forgot I had an 8am meeting) and scrambled to photograph the sunrise. It’s true the sun makes you work fast, but so does the compulsive insatiability.
Polaroid lab collage using itype film.
Until next time…
