I miss surprises. I have been less mobile lately (I’m on the mend!) and have not been able to walk around as much as I’d like, which means I’ve probably missed many visual surprises. I’m happy I stumbled upon this strange photo shoot. I only had my phone on me so here you go.
I wasn’t expecting to see this moment of gold at Bellevue Hospital (where my mother had oral surgery).
I’m currently making my way through the Collected Stories of Mavis Gallant. I’m uncertain how I feel that these stories are organized by the decade in which they are set. The stories were not necessarily written in those decades (I do like that the year each story was published is included).
First one I read is “The Other Paris” and you’re in a master’s hands. A story of a young American woman who is proposed to (after a 3 week courtship) and attempts to fall in love after the fact.
This made me laugh, “She seldom smiled and, because her English was at once precise and inaccurate, often sounded sarcastic.”
I also liked this, “She realized for the first time that something could be perfectly accurate but untruthful…”
And at the end, “She would forget the rain and her unshared confusion and loneliness, and remember instead the Paris of films, the street lamps with their tinsel icicles, the funny concert hall where the ceiling collapsed, and there would be, at last, a coherent picture, accurate but untrue.”
I haven’t completed a short story in years (I’ve been working on my novel!) but I do hope to one day write stories again. I love the form. Here is the last story I published, in 2019. “So Wild”
Before and After Science is the latest new (to me) Brian Eno record. I realized some of the songs have been used in films. Very Paranoid 1980s (that’s really the hangover of the 1970s). Anyway, “Kings Lead Hat” is the pop song of the record. This is the single version.
Until next time…
