After squabbling between NYS Governor Cuomo and NYC Mayor de Blasio came to a head last week, it was announced that a new tier of people, including P-12 teachers, would be eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine. I used my concert ticket procuring skills to monitor the appointment website and on Saturday evening I got an appointment for Monday, 11:30am, at Kings County Hospital.
After arriving and being redirected to the correct location, I waited in a line of teachers eager for the first dose. We were then ushered upstairs, went into a room to register, saw a nurse, then got a number to wait our turn. I got called into a room partitioned for privacy. My nurse was cheerful and when she asked me how I was I told her I was happy and excited. That seemed to lift her up and when she found out I was a teacher she thanked me for our work and I said, “No, thank you.” I bragged that I wore a loose sweater to make it easy to give me an injection and she said, “Teachers are always prepared.” She explained everything clearly and demonstrated what to do if I experienced soreness the next day. Then I had to wait fifteen minutes in case I had a reaction…and then it was over. Everyone I encountered seemed happy to be doing this work and they were all women of color.
After finding out my mother is also eligible I spent most of a day trying to get her an appointment. The system is too complicated, and it’s only in English. If she didn’t have me to navigate this for her there’s no way she would have gotten an appointment (which I finally secured after midnight—refresh!refresh!—for the end of January).
This is a photo essay so I don’t want to say too much, but I began at home, where I’ve spent the majority of my time since March, and then I walked over to Kings County Hospital. This is a little bit of what I noticed.
