I think I briefly mentioned Evelyn Hofer in an early newsletter because I write about her photography in my novel.
Here is the cover of her book, New York, one of my favorite photo books.
As I noted earlier, Eudora Welty wanted to study photography with Berenice Abbott but was rejected as a candidate, so she turned to writing. Similarly, Evelyn Hofer wanted to study piano, but upon rejection she took up photography. This profile says that she usually used a 4x5 large format camera, which is impressive with some of these seemingly candid shots. Once she began making color photographs she used the dye transfer printing process. She also turned to still life and said painters, “showed me how to look”.
In the upcoming weeks I will be publishing a series of essays on photography and ethics. I will also try to include relevant images but I thought this week was a good time to let photos speak for themselves.
Until next time…
