The Pictures, Securing Peter Hujar’s Place Among the Greats
A heartbreaking article about what it takes to secure an artist’s legacy.
I had the great fortune to see the Hujar exhibit at the Morgan Library. He’s one of those greats that makes me want to push myself to use black and white, even though I only really enjoy it if I’m making portraits. (If you’re in New York City I am looking for models! Outdoors, socially distanced.)
Here’s a little bit of a thwarted comeback:
Fiery Furnaces. What a weird little band. I saw them open for Britt Daniel at Maxwell’s back in the early 2000s and I thought they were true originals, so I chatted up Eleanor Friedberger after the show and she gave me a CDR of their demo. Imagine my surprise a few years ago when I stopped into my favorite bookstore, Unnameable, and Matthew was behind the counter. We ended up chatting over the year or so he worked as a buyer and bookseller. After a while I mentioned that I had their CDR demo and he said, “Oh, no.” Don’t worry. I’m not putting that on ebay.
This year was supposed to be the Fiery Furnace’s great comeback but alas, the pandemic had other plans for everyone.
Here is the single Fiery Furnaces released this year, “Down at the So and So on Somewhere”, a song I could NOT get out of my head. Plaintive and aloof at the same time. Trademark Matthew and Eleanor.
And Eleanor Friedberger has her solo career going strong. Here are solo renditions of “Make me a Song”, and “My Mistakes”, recorded for the Andy Warhol Museum, Silver Studio Sessions.
Candid shot of Eleanor Friedberger after her set opening for Deerhunter, at Warsaw, 2017. Fuji Xpro2
Remember concerts? This fan was anointed by Bradford Cox, of Deerhunter. He painted while Eleanor performed. Fuji Xpro2, 2017
Taken with my MamiyaRz67 and the Polaroid back for pack film, Fuji fp100c (I cropped out the borders on the side because when you use this back on the Mamiya you lose the two sides as it only exposes the middle square of the print.) I managed to break the two glass lamps, and the two colored glasses. I love colored glass!
Polaroid 600 duochrome print. I had a polaroid lab malfunction and ended up with an accidental double exposure. I miss being able to explore out of the way places like the Airline Diner (made famous by a little film called, Goodfellas.)
Until next time…
