My essay, “If You See Something” is finally here!
It was recommended in the New York Times newsletter, What to Do This Weekend.
The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, please do, and let me know what you think. I don’t write to be agreed with, but to make you think and then we can have a conversation.
One of the students I mentioned in the essay is applying to art schools for photography, and is my intern, so I shared my page proofs with her to read. Today she told me she read part of it and asked me if it’s true that my mother was a garment factory worker. I said that she was and then she told me that her mother has been a garment factory worker for twenty years. She asked me,”Did she also make just a little money?” I said my mother was also exploited and taken advantage of. Then we reminisced about visiting our mothers in their factories. I said my sister and I would say hello to all the Ayi’s and they would give us candy, and we used to take the plastic garment bags and run down the factory floor letting it fill with air to create a long balloon and she laughed because she used to do the same thing. It was nice to commiserate with someone about our mother’s experiences, something I haven’t been able to do with many people. Afterward she went off to do her intern duties (shelving library books) and I had tears in my eyes thinking about how hard my mom worked for so little, but then I went back to my own library work.
P. S.- Today is my birthday!
Until next time…
