This week’s recommendation is Ira Kaplan’s radio show on WFMU. Tuesdays from 9-12pm. I’m a huge fan of Yo La Tengo and it’s great to hear the music that influences. Also, with nowhere to be these days having appointment listening is a treat.
This week he played a song I’ve long loved, The Cookies’ “I Never Dreamed” and a song I was unfamiliar with, but that immediately caught my ear, Flipper’s “Way of the World”
I’m still reading Robert Adam’s Beauty in Photography and it’s so considered. The essay titled “Photographing Evil” articulates so much of what I’m trying to write about for a particular piece I hope to pitch for publication (still in the research phase—I want to have good scholarship to back up my ideas). Janet Malcolm, Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes, and John Berger all get their just due for their photography writing but one thing I’ve always felt was missing from their work on photography was the experience of making photographs. With the exception of Berger, who studied drawing, they all wrote from a theorist’s perspective, rather than the practitioner’s, which is where most criticism is written from.
Earlier this week I wrote about finding those stranger’s wedding photos but among the piles of albums and negatives was a photo album of cheap Duane Reade prints of…Hulk Hogan. I figured out these were behind the scenes photos from his television show. Prints were made September 2004, pre-Gawker lawsuit.

Until next time…
