Recommendations:
I interviewed writer Justin Taylor for Believer Magazine.
Highly recommend his memoir, Riding With the Ghost.
And his short story collection, Flings.
Here’s one little bit of craft advice from Justin that I loved:
BLVR: Do you have any personal rules or guidelines for including popular culture in your writing?
JT: The K-Mart realists were right about this much: in our culture, you don’t buy “a soda.” You buy a Coke, or a Mountain Dew Code Red. Writers can get a bit precious about keeping brand names out of their work, which may make the world they’re building feel more pure, but less realistic.
And of course if you’re not familiar, get familiar with Jason Molina, whose song, “I’m Riding with the Ghost” Justin got his title from, do listen. We lost a great one.
“While you was gone you must have done a lot of favors
You've got a whole lot of things I don't think
That you could ever have paid for
While you've been busy crying
About my past mistakes
I've been busy trying to make a change”
Jason Molina died in 2013 from complications of alcoholism. He was 39.
An emulsion lift of an itype Polaroid print. These are tricky and this one wasn’t that successful as I lost some of the image and didn’t get the white backing off but I still like it.
Until next time…
